The crown of a tooth is made up of three layers namely, enamel, dentin, and pulp. If tooth decay is limited to the first two layers, it can be treated by fillings or restoration but if it surpasses the third layer, then a procedure called as root canal treatment is performed to restore the tooth’s former function.
Root canal treatment involves the removal of inflamed or infected tooth material, cleaning and shaping of the canals along with disinfection, filling and sealing with an inert material, and restoration of the crown or cap. Root canal treatment generally takes 3-4 dental sittings to be completed. It saves the tooth from extraction and relieves the pain caused due to inflammation of the pulp. The treated tooth may heal within a few days. Patients may experience pain after the wearing off of local anesthesia. This pain is relieved by painkillers.
